Terrain for Beginners

Bild
Since the big reboot of Star Wars: Legion, I’ve noticed a rise in questions about terrain. What kind of terrain do I need? How much of my board should be covered? Is terrain for Legion and Shatterpoint the same scale? In this blog post, I’ll try to answer the most common questions beginners have for both Legion and Shatterpoint. Terrain! Huh, what is it good for? Immersion: Terrain serves several purposes in tabletop gaming. First of all, it’s crucial for immersion. There’s a big difference between playing an old-school board game without any lore or visually appealing details and diving into a richly themed universe. We’re playing Star Wars games filled with lore, set in a vast galaxy far, far away! Bringing that atmosphere to life on the gaming board is where the fun begins. We get to immerse ourselves in the Star Wars universe and forget about the outside world for a few hours. To achieve this level of immersion, the terrain we use should look detailed and otherworldly. Sure, we cou...

Which should I pick? Starter Sets for Star Wars Legion

Bild
The new starter sets are out, and I think it's a great time to compare them to one another. First off, I started with the original trilogy starter set for Star Wars: Legion. Since then, the game has continued to evolve. I think the new starter sets are the best so far, and they set a new gold standard for getting started with an army-sized wargame. Let's see what's great about them in general before looking at each of them individually. 1. They focus on one faction alone. It’s been standard in wargaming for a long time that starter sets include a rulebook, two armies, plus dice, tokens, etc. which is.... fine. It still has that nostalgic feel of opening a box and discovering the contents. However, it’s always been a bit of a clunky experience. First off, it’s difficult to split it 50/50 with a friend. Usually, the tokens, dice, and rulebook come in uneven numbers, and you have to decide who gets what. The new Legion starters are better in this regard: I pick my favorite arm...

Squad Analysis: Delta Squad, Form Up

Bild
The Delta Squad is an elite, four-member unit of clone commandos. While standard Clone Troopers engage in regular warfare, Delta Squad undertakes special operations such as rescue, sabotage, and intelligence missions. Each member has unique abilities that aid them on the battlefield of Shatterpoint: Boss is the tactical leader of the squad; Fixer, well… basically fixes things. He’s the squad’s handyman; Sev is the sniper; and Scorch is the explosives expert. We know them from the first-person shooter Republic Commando, where they first see major action at the Battle of Geonosis, carrying out missions behind enemy lines and decimating the Geonosians. It’s absolutely fantastic that we get to play characters from fan-favorite video games. Especially when the game is as good as Republic Commando! Plus, now we can field a strike team composed entirely of Clone Troopers. RC-1138 “Boss” Role: Reliable damage dealer and leader-type character  Strengths Good damage dealer: In his stance Wet...

Star Wars Legion Game Review

Bild
If you’re a Star Wars fan and a tabletop wargaming enthusiast, you’re in luck! I still vividly remember, 20 years ago, how I kitbashed my Warhammer 40K Space Marines, trying to make them look more like Stormtroopers. Of course, I would have preferred having a legitimate Star Wars tabletop wargame instead of kitbashing miniatures and homebrewing 40K rules, but there was just no way back then. Star Wars: Legion is my 20-years-in-the-making dream come true! This game lets you be the commander in battles across a galaxy far, far away. Finally, I can have my own Wookiee Warriors (I guess the Kroot came kind of close, but they were still not the real deal) fighting alongside the rest of my Rebel army. Obviously, if the Imperials, droid Separatists, or Republic clones are more your jam, Legion provides those as well. No matter your choice of army, Legion totally captures the thrill of large-scale Star Wars warfare.             Impression from "Spiel in Essen" 2025...

Squad Analysis: Terror from Below Squad

Bild
It's time to get SEA-rious! Today, we’re diving into the “Terror from Below Squad Pack.” Disney has brought us some violent and terrifying sea monsters. You know, besides Ariel and that talking crab.  Riff Tamson, Nossor Ri, and the Aqua Droids make up the new squad. Riff is a Karkaradon who terrorized Mon Cala in the name of the Separatists. Nossor Ri is an opportunistic chieftain of the Quarren. Both are super obscure Separatist characters from a couple of Clone Wars episodes. And I'm all here for it! So let's jump into the shark tank! Riff Tamson Role: Riff is a classic brawler with a vampiric twist. Strengths Good Vampire: When Riff makes a melee attack with his Identity, he gains one extra die for each enemy wounded and/or injured unit within Range 4. That can be a lot of dice “RIFF-diculous,” even! Pretty cool, and it already shows what Riff wants to do. And here's the vampiric twist to it: He also refreshes one Force for each wounded enemy within Range 4. Plus i...
